This week students began meeting in their book groups. They each got to choose the book they wanted to read, out of some suggested titles. It’s been fun to watch their enthusiasm as they dive into these new books. The best part so far is to engage with them about the books they read. Students are stopping to ask questions, rereading, noting some new vocabulary words, discussing character traits, etc…
In math we continue working on fractions. Some students are definitely getting more comfortable in applying what the meaning of the bottom number and top number of the fractions are and what they mean. We’ve used various ways to represent and identify fractions. We also practiced being given a unit fraction such as 1/3 and knowing what that tells us in terms of how to divide a number line into 3rds. We also used fraction tiles to help the students to visually see how fractions relate to certain benchmark fractions like ½. Some ways to reinforce/practice these concepts could be to go onto our Half Day webpage under math and find the fractions page to practice fractions through these different interactive games. Students also can revisit the lessons we watched on the Envisions webpage (it’s bookmarked in my homework page and under Half Day math page). There are extra practice problems listed under each lesson. Thank you so much for your continued review of math facts. It makes a big difference!
We finished our science unit on simple machines. Students really enjoyed the various experiments we had in class. They were divided into groups to create a poster about a specific simple machine and are in the process of presenting their machines to the class. Pictures are posted on our webpage. A review guide went home to help your child study for the test, which will be given most likely next Thursday.
Enjoy your weekend!
