Last week in reading, we read about how our government works. We talked about voting and what it means to be a good citizen. Students read a few selections about voting and we also discussed points of view. This week our reading series also corresponds well to our science unit on animals. The essential question posed was “How can people help animals to survive?” We read story that was under the genre of “expository essay” called Kids to the Rescue. Expository texts give facts and information about a topic. It also includes headings and sidebars, and text features such as maps. This was about how children helped to rescue sea turtles after an oil spill. We also talked about prefixes that are added to the beginning of root words that change the meaning of the root word.
In math we have been learning about perimeter and area. Students are confident in giving the definition of those terms.
Perimeter= the total outside distance around and object
Area= the total inside distance of an object
When it comes to solving the problems, sometimes they still get area and perimeter confused. We will continue to work on area and perimeter this week. Some things you can practice at home are to ask your child to measure an object, such as a computer or the side of a tissue box. Can they find the perimeter of that object as well as the area? Our Half Day webpage hold some activities that students can use to practice area and perimeter…. http://halfdaylinks.weebly.com/area-perimeter-and-volume.html
We’ve completed our crayfish research wheel and will be adding that to our portfolio piece. Students have learned a lot about animals through our unit. Each student is now creating an animal to demonstrate what they have learned through the classifications of animals and the different adaptations animals have in order to survive.
In writing, students have begun a writing piece about how to prepare for Thanksgiving. We started with a graphic organizer where we brainstormed and wrote down 3 big things that should happen when preparing for a feast. Then students each wrote down 3 specific details under each big heading for their support. This coming week, we will be turning those ideas into their 5 paragraph essay. We can’t wait to share those with you. Stay warm today!
Reminders:
1. Home Learning Logs due, 11/20
2. Spelling Test, 11/20
