Happy first day of spring! Here’s to more fair weather days ahead for us!
This week in reading students focused on fairy tales. Students listened to “Wei and the Golden Goose”. They also read Juanita and the Beanstalk and Clever Jack Takes the Cake. In all these stories, students stopped to summarize as they read in order to check for understanding. They also used context clues to figure out new word meanings, and discussed what the main idea and details of the texts are. These are great skills to reinforce as they read at home too.
In math, we continued with our work on understanding fractions. Students also learned about mixed fractions and improper fractions. There are lessons on Envisions that students can go back to review and/or to practice from. We also worked in groups to figure out how to divide a certain amount of "cookies" equally among a various number of people. I was pleased to see how much they have grown in their understanding of fractions and the ability to work in groups. Students were then individually challenged to divide "brownies" equally among various number of people. Some questions were harder, but the students overall are becoming more and more comfortable with fractions. Please also continue to work on learning/reviewing math facts for fact fluency.
In social studies, students began our study of the great city of Chicago. Your child brought home a packet explaining the Chicago project that he/she will need to complete by 5/1. We went over it in class and discussed the expectations. Next week, I will be sharing some examples of past students' projects to help your child to get an idea of what he/she could do for the Chicago landmark that he/she chooses to research. Please return the bottom half of the bright green paper by next Thursday, 3/26/15, with your choice indicated. This helps me to be able to order the trifold boards (if that’s what your child chooses to present his/her project on) over break. My hope is that it’ll be here by the time we return from break so I can pass it out to your child. Students who choose to make a brochure or a multimedia presentation should still return the paper indicating that choice as well. Thank you so much! We also have been excited to receive community letters from our friends and relatives. It’s been fun to learn about various communities and talk about what is similar and different. We hope to be getting more back soon!
In science we began our unit on rocks and minerals. Students have been using almost all of their senses to talk about how the rocks are similar and different. We can’t wait to dive in deeper in the coming weeks.
It’s been a long winter and we’re down to our last box of Kleenex. If you can send in a box for our class, we would so appreciate it.
Have a wonderful, restful weekend!
