This week in reading, we revisited the genre of realistic fiction. Can your child name for you the characteristics of realistic fiction? We talked about how everyone has talents and how we can use those talents to help others. Students read a long and a short text in this genre. As we were reading, we practiced our reading fluency. Students also practiced stopping to ask and answer questions to check for understanding. We also talked about point of view. We read the stories and went back to talk about what the author’s point of view on various characters were and proved it by citing text evidence. This can be practiced at home with their nightly reading.
In math we took a pretest for our new unit on fractions. We talked about how fractions are equal parts of a whole. To practice in a fun way, students wrote stories about going to a pizza parlor with their families. They used fractions to talk about how much each person in their family ate. We also talked about what the numerator and denominator mean.
Our force and motion unit is well under way. This week, students explored the wheel and axle and the pulley. Students lifted some weights by rotating the axle only and then rotating by turning the wheel. One required less force than the other. Can your child tell you which one it was, the wheel or the axle? We also talked about pulleys and how they help make our work easier. Students learned that pulling down on something is much easier than lifting something up. We used a single fixed pulley to lift some washers and will continue to talk about a moveable pulley next week as well as exploring a few more simple machines.
Frindle was a hit! We had a great time sitting back and enjoying the story brought to life. Students were asked to think about 3 things that are the same or different from the book versus the play. We had a great discussion after we got back. Thank you Mrs. Kravets and Mrs. Plendl for coming with us on this trip!
This year we’ve been working on building our relationships with our friends both in the classroom and throughout the school. We’ve been working through our social emotional learning lessons in class, which focuses on self- awareness and self-management skills, social awareness and interpersonal skills. One of our students was upset this week about not being able to do something and I was so proud and pleased to see how the students in our classroom empathized and tried to encourage. What a wonderful group of children!!
Happy Valentine’s Day! Enjoy your long weekend!!
