April showers bring May flowers…We have certainly had our fair share of rain this past week.
This past week, students have learned been reading and learning about the Great Chicago Fire. As a class we have been reading, highlighting key details that talk about the possible cause of the fire, the locations that are important, how people behaved, etc… After locating these, students have been taking fact fragments in their note taking sheets. We also have a webQuest that was put together by the third grade teachers. Imbedded in this webQuest are articles, other student friendly websites, and videos that can help the students to further understand more about the fire. After we finish taking notes, students will be using historical information gathered to write a narrative. We hope to be able to complete this by Portfolio Night (4/22) so that we can share these with you!
In math, we have been learning about polygons, line segments, lines, rays and angles. Can your child tell you the differences between right, acute, and obtuse angles? Can they also tell you the different between an intersecting line, perpendicular lines, and parallel lines? Thank you for continuing to work on math facts. This past week we played multiplication and division bingo in class and it was so exciting to see how quickly some students are recalling those facts.
Our 3rd Grade World’s Fair is this coming Wednesday. Thank you so much for all the parents who have already signed up to volunteer. If you didn’t get to do so and find that you have time on Wednesday morning to join in and help for this great social studies event for our 3rd graders, please sign up via http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e094eafab2ca13-3rdgrade or by contacting Co-Chairs Veronica Woolson at [email protected] or Robin Babbo at [email protected].
We wrapped up our science unit on rocks and minerals this week. Students worked in groups to describe the 12 minerals. They used most of their senses to describe various aspects of each mineral such as the texture and hardness of these minerals. We can't wait to explain these more in depth at portfolio night when we can share our findings with you.
Hope you are enjoying your weekend!
Reminders:
1. World’s Fair- 4/15- come dressed as children from that time period and or clothing that represents your family’s culture. A flyer was sent home right after spring break with all the details.
2. Home Learning Log, Spelling test, book orders due 4/16
3. Chicago Project due 5/1
