Let it snow! Let it snow! Let is snow! What a way for us to welcome in the month of February! It was another busy week at school. Students finished writing, typing, and creating their final book review project. They worked hard to summarize the text and to give reasons why they recommend others to read the book of their choice. I took pictures of their projects and posted it on our albums page. I am so proud of them for persevering. It wasn’t easy to summarize the plot, but students did a wonderful job in the end! We also read a story about the Bobbsey Twins that had an ending that left us hanging. We talked about being careful readers as some of the questions asked really made us go back to the text to prove our answers. We are working hard to pay close attention to details and to make sure we understand what we are trying to answer or to prove. Students where then given an opportunity to work together to come up with an ending to this narrative. We shared those aloud and talked about the strengths of each group’s answers and what we could do to improve the next time we try a similar exercise.
Thank you again for helping your child to complete the community research. Thank you for all the addressed envelopes that have come back. If you haven’t done so, please send those back this week. We started to write our community letters. We are eager to finish it up this week and to send it off. We can’t wait to start receiving letters from all around the US and the world!
In science, we began our force and motion unit. This unit in science will have an end of the unit test. There will be a study guide that comes home as we get closer to the end of the unit. Students talked about what force is. Can they tell you what it is and how force is measured? On our website, I’ve uploaded pictures of the students using push/pull meters as they tried to move objects a certain distance and to measure how many Newtons it takes to move those objects. We also had a fun experiment where students worked in groups to push against a wall. The question that was asked as a follow up was” Did you do work?” Ask your child about that interesting discussion and to see if they can name for you the 3 key ingredients that scientists say we need in order to define work. There are many more hands on experiments that we are looking forward to doing in the upcoming weeks!
Please stay safe in this weather. Enjoy your Sunday celebrating, eating, and shoveling!
Reminders:
1. Frindle field trip sign up is online
2. Great American reading log due 2/20
3. Please bring in an empty cereal box. We are half way there!
4. Home learning logs, 2/5
5. Spelling test 2/5
6. Keep working on those math facts
